Suzzanne Ponomarenko Dance

Suzzanne Ponomarenko (she/they) has been Choreographing, Producing, Organizing, and Performing Dance in New York City for over a decade, and enjoys straddling the line between “uptown” and “downtown” dance. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, they received their BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College while studying extensively at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. While in college, they began working under Richard Move/MoveOpolis! in various roles, where they witnessed and learned the art of self-producing. With Move, they had the opportunity to work on Martha @...The 1963 Interview at the Singapore International Festival of Arts, “The Show (Achilles Heel)” featuring Debbie Harry and the Martha Graham Dance Company, Herstory of the Universe #1@Parrish Art Museum, and most recently, Herstory of the Universe@Dartmouth. In addition, they worked with Buglisi Dance Theater during her inaugural performance of The Table of Silence Project, performed now annually at Lincoln Center Plaza on 9/11 as a prayer for peace. With Buglisi, Suzzanne performed at the The Joyce Theater, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, and The National Dance Institute, among others and reveres Buglisi’s  presence in the dance community. From 2014-2019 they worked as Dancer and Rehearsal Director for internationally touring Shadow Dance Company and America’s Got Talent Finalists, where they prepared and performed tours in Germany, The Americas, Israel, France, Lithuania, and countless corporate projects (a highlight includes performing at Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal).  Around 2014 they became a member of the Stanley Love Performance Group where they received their first dance heart transplant. With Stanley, they performed at the international dance hub, Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany, The Kitchen, Gene Frankel Theatre, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, Judson Church, JACK, The Whitney as part of DANCENOISE: DON’T LOOK BACK -King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, Bushwig, Performa, and many many more. Suzzanne also performed the works of Yvonne Rainer as part of MoMA’s exhibit: Judson Dance Theater: The Work Is Never Done in We Shall Run (1963) and the Chair Pillow Dance (1969). As a choreographer, Suzzanne has been choreographing and organizing dance from rooftops to theaters since 2012. They officially formed Suzzanne Ponomarenko Dance Company in 2017 as a place to create and performance dance in a joyous and relaxed environment. Most recently, they returned from Kaatsbaan Cutltural Park in Tivoli, N Y where they were given the opportunity to develop their latest dance piece, DANCEBATH. In addition, their work has been seen at Jacob’s Pillow “On the Road” Festival, BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Mid-Atlantic Queer Choreographers Festival, Arts on Site, Dumbo Dance Festival, London Contemporary Arts Gallery, Versatility Dance Festival, O+ Festival in Kingston, NY, Detroit Dance Festival, Triskelion Arts, Dixon Place, The EVAC Art Gallery NYC, Gibney Dance Center, Caras Alegres, and Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Space. They worked in collaboration with Spaceworks NYC (rest in peace) to create and expand The Senior Care Project, which brought artists of various mediums to Senior Centers in District 38. In collaboration with A Broader View and Go Guatamala! they brought dance workshops and classes which culminated in performances to three locations in Xela, Guatemala in 2017 + 2019. With Heather Robles, they produced The Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief fundraiser in 2018, with Fooju Dance (Adam Robert Dickerson) they created an evening length dance show to fundraise for Exodus Road, and organization dedicated to ending human trafficking.  Their next community project includes transforming Center Stage into a Rocky Horror Style show to fundraise for underfunded dance orgs. and artists. Suzzanne in addition is a longtime yoga + meditation teacher, traveler, Zen enthusiast, lucid dreamer, reiki practitioner, tarot reader, psychonaut, and a little bit “out there,” but in a good way.
